Sharing the Knowledge

An institution of higher learning’s role as a disseminator of knowledge and skills are inherent. Every semester, students are given assignments, case studies, presentation as well as research papers. The purpose of these exercise are to gauge the student’s comprehension and application of the learned materials.

Using case studies, the lecturers hope that their students can apply the theories and make recommendation. A more alert student would certainly do his or her work as relevant as possible.

 

Introducing Scribd

Scribd (http://www.scribd.com) is a free Internet-based communication platform. This website has attracted millions of users to form a myriad of communities revolving various interests. Scribd proudly calls itself the world’s largest social reading and publishing company.

So what does this have to do with students and institutes of higher learning?

Not every institution has the luxury of publishing its own set of books. Through the democratisation of publishing by Scribd, small institutions now have that opportunity. What’s more: in cyberspace, all location are equal.

Google search engine operates through an ever-changing algorithm which matches a user’s search with the most relevant information online. Through these keywords, Google search can produce a student’s work online, uploaded on Scribd.

Scribd allows users to share the document/work published with people they feel should know it. Just imagine when a user finds a student/lecturer’s work to be useful, then proceeded to share it. If it’s relevant to the industry, the idea has a potential to go viral! Remember, it’s not any Tom, Dick or Harry who’s sharing the work – it’s professionals, practitioners and experts!

 

How to go about it?

Based on what the institution is trying to promote, here is one mechanic to execute this:

Request that every group/student submit a soft copy of their work to the lecturer. Preferably through email. The lecturer assesses the work and passes it to the relevant officer. This officer ensures that before the document is uploaded to Scribd, there is at least a “watermark” or header/footer where the college’s name can be seen. Leave the student’s name and student ID intact with the document.

 

The Benefits

 

First, this acts as a testimonial. This student is real and is studying here. He or she is not a model hired to execute an advertisement.

Second, cost wise, this effort is free. It’s works in tandem with the assessment flow of a typical college. It’s also so simple to execute and maintain!

Next, when students realise that their work is available online, it can act as an incentive to do better. When something’s online, anyone can asses the work – including potential employers.

This method allows people to share the work safely. With the in-built security features of Scribd and the watermarks by the college, the reader can trace the source of the information.

Transparency is forced through this process. From transparency, it must be fueled by confidence, dedication and pride. Just as Ivy League and top 100 universities are proud of their faculty’s and students’ works, even a minor college should emulate this positive culture. In the workplace, an employee’s action will be appraised, assessed and critiqued after all. But when confidence, dedication and pride is merged, you can be sure of the level of participation.

As Scribd is a global platform, the number of potential readers are enormous! If you’re recruiting international students, wouldn’t this work in your favour?

The more the relevant content is online, the more a college’s brand becomes known.

Making a Buzz Through YouTube

YouTube is becoming more and more a communication channel than purely social media. Drones of groups, or “tribes” per Seth Godin, gather and linger around a video. Each having their own opinion, for or against the person who posted it. More and more attention is given based, not on the video itself, but based on the comments and ratings.

If you are a private college in Malaysia with international/global outreach, YouTube is one leverage ready for you, for free!

Why Use YouTube?

Before we go to the “how”, let’s examine the “why” first. So stating the obvious: why should you, a private college in Malaysia, use YouTube to recruit students?

Your prospective students would most probably use YouTube. Let’s say the age range is 18 – 24, you can bet your bottom dollar that a sizeable group of this age range uses YouTube for whatever reason.

YouTube is a free, 24/7. Unlike advertising through conventional offline media, you need to pay every time someone sees it. Even then, it’s limited to the market of that medium. Let’s say you choose to advertise on TV3 of Malaysia. You need to pay every time it is aired, whether or not anyone views it. TV3 does not command a monopoly, since the launch of Astro Satellite TV services. And TV3, through Astro, can only reach Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore at best! What about Hong Kong? The UK? The US? Australia and New Zealand? You want to air the same advert, you need to approach the channel available in that market. This effectively increases your cost to air. Through YouTube, it’s available in that website for anyone to view at any time, anywhere. No matter how often someone shares it and where, the private college does not need to pay-per-view.

You control YouTube Video/Channel. As owner of the video post or channel, you can control how much, or how little, buzz can be created around your video. You have the option to censor the comments, if you so choose. But be warned, Internet users would not be too happy with censorship.

You get feedback from views and on viewers. As the owner of the video/channel, you have access to vital statistics on your channel and your video. This is something you do not have when advertising in conventional offline media – printed or broadcasting. The best part of these statistics is that it’s real time. It’ll be redundant to say the statistics are updated and near-accurate!

How to Use YouTube?

Go through YouTube and watch the videos with over 5,000 views. What do they have in common? Content.

Videos purely for advertising with the lack of content would be received coldly. But what is content? What do we mean? How do we know what qualifies as content.

There are several factors to consider and is not limited to the following list:

  • Audience
  • The brand of the video owner
  • The message/story/arrangement presented
  • The outcome/feeling after watching your video

Here are some potential videos the private college can make and post:

  1. The classroom experience – 3-minutes of a class in action, no scripting in the shoot
  2. Advise and tips by college lecturer, staff, counselors or students
  3. Activities by the college
  4. Testimonials of present students and past graduates
  5. For graduates, testimonials from the employers
  6. A short lecture/tutorial.

Again, the list is infinite!

Consistency is Key

Consistency brings in many meaning depending on context. When saying consistency, here are what I mean:

Consistency with Branding – Make sure the look and feel of the video is consistent with the image or brand of the private college

Consistency with Past Videos – As revolutionary as the videos may be, be consistent in the positive outcome of the last video.

Consistency in Posting – Be consistent in posting videos, perhaps once every month at least, or once every two months. Also, after every activity in addition to the regular videos.

Spec Work: Radio Promo for Aidilfitri

While I was on the road today, an idea flashed in my mind: a radio script for this year’s Aidilfitri programme promo on radio. It’s just a speculative work. Let’s set this year’s working title as ‘Luminasi Lebaran’.

The radio promo would fit nicely in a 20 second spot with a 4 second extra for jingle. As for talent, a male with solid voice – not necessarily deep – would be ideal. Read in a ‘pantun’/‘gurindam’ style, but not to the effect that it would limit the execution.

Pembentangan Kajian Separuh Penggal RMK-9

Persidangan ke-2 Dewan Negara

Parlimen Malaysia Ke-12

Tuan Yang Di Pertua,

Sepertimana yang kita semua tahu, YAB Perdana Menteri Malaysia telah membentangkan di Dewan Rakyat pada 26 Jun 2008 yang lalu Kajian Separuh Penggal Rancangan Malaysia Kesembilan. Hasil kajian ini mendapat reaksi yang berbeza-beza dari golongan dan kumpulan-kumpulan lain. Namun, reaksi, dengan izin, stakeholders seharusnya menjadi keutamaan Kerajaan. Dalam persoalan siapakah stakeholder pada ketika ini? Jawapannya, Tuan Yang Di Pertua, berada di luar Dewan yang mulia ini: stakeholder adalah rakyat Malaysia yang telah memberi kepercayaan, mandat, kesetiaan dan sumber kepada Kerajaan Malaysia. Ini kerana rancangan dan inisiatif-inisiatif Kerajaan seharusnya memberi manfaat kepada mereka, bukan kepada segelintir yang pentingkan kedudukan politik dan kuasa. Sebagai ahli Dewan Negara yang telah dilantik oleh Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak, maka adalah tanggungjawab saya untuk mengetengahkan reaksi rakyat di negeri Bumi Kenyalang terhadap Kajian Separuh Penggal RMK 9.

Tuan Yang Di Pertua,

Semestinya adalah hasrat pihak Kerajaan agar rakyat dapat menikmati pembangunan dan perubahan yang berterusan dan berkesinambungan. Oleh itu, pelaburan dan pembangunan modal insan adalah mustahak. Bak kata pepatah: melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya. Menteri Pelajaran menekankan bahawa pihaknya dalam proses memperkasakan sekolah-sekolah kebangsaan selain memberi penekanan dalam pendidikan awal dan vokasional khususnya di Sarawak dan Sabah. Selain itu, rakyat juga mengalu-alukan peruntukan sebanyak RM13.5 billion bagi tujuan pembangunan pendidikan ini.

Saya ingin mengambil kesempatan ini untuk mencadangkan kepada pihak Kementerian agar dalam pembangunan dan perluasan pendidikan vokasional di Sarawak, khususnya, biarlah matapelajaran dan, dengan izin, niche sesebuah Sekolah Menengah Teknik itu bersesuaian dengan kegiatan ekonomi dan permintaan terhadap kemahiran berkenaan di lokasi sekolah itu. Sebagai contoh, memandangkan SMT Betong berada berhampiran dengan kawasan agropolitan Bukit Sadok, kursus-kursus yang ditawarkan di sekolah ini sewajarnya berteraskan pertanian dan perladangan. Satu lagi contoh, memandangkan Sekolah-Sekolah Teknik Sibu dan Bintulu berada di dalam Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy atau SCORE, dengan izin, lazimnya niche sekolah-sekolah ini berkisar industri dan tenaga elektrik. Pada pandangan saya juga, peluang pendidikan teknikal dalam jurusan-jurusan ini tidak sepatutnya dihadkan kepada pelajar-pelajar lelaki, malah boleh dibuka kepada pelajar-pelajar perempuan. Dalam isu kesinambungan, soal lelaki atau perempuan tidak menjadi masalah; sebaliknya, persoalannya ialah sama ada tenaga manusia mencukupi atau tidak.

Sementara kita masih berbincang tentang pendidikan, adalah disarankan agar institusi-institusi pengajian tinggi yang telah bertapak di negeri Sarawak diberi kelonggaran dan keutamaan dalam menrancang dan menyediakan program-program pengajian yang berkaitan dengan perancangan kerajaan di kawasan berkenaan. Melalui cara ini, pihak kerajaan telah menyelam sambil minum air. IPT-IPT dalam keadaan ini boleh menjadi pusat R&D dan perkembangan teknologi. Pada era Teknologi Maklumat masa kini, prasarana ‘maklumat’ ini boleh merangsangkan lagi pertumbuhan ekonomi dan pembangunan di Sarawak, khususnya dan Malaysia amnya.

Tanpa mengira peringkat pengajian, dalam usaha untuk melahirkan rakyat ’minda kelas pertama’, berpengetahuan dan berinovasi, kurikulum di sekolah perlu dikaji semula bagi mengembangkan kemahiran berfikir secara kritis dan kreatif. Kajian semula ini adalah perlu bagi memastikan kaedah pengajaran dan pembelajaran dinamik seiring dengan perubahan masa, teknologi dan masyarakat. Selain itu, nilai-nilai moral dan, dengan izin, civic mindedness perlu dipupuk dari peringkat pra-sekolah. Pada masa kini, tidak cukup untuk sekadar mempunyai ilmu; jika kualiti tenaga manusia di Malaysia ingin berada setaraf dengan yang berada di negara maju, generasi baru juga perlu mahir mengembang, mengubahsuai dan menyesuaikan apa yang telah dipelajari dengan keadaan sebenar.

Tuan Yang Di Pertua,

Dari pembangunan sumber manusia, saya ingin beralih kepada prasarana dan pembangunan luar bandar.Tanpa perancangan terperinci dan pemantauan berterusan prasarana, ia akan menjadi sukar bagi melaksanakan pembangunan peringkat seterusnya. Oleh itu, pihak Kerajaan Negeri telah memohon daripada Kerajaan Persekutuan sekurang-kurangnya RM300 juta. Peruntukan tambahan ini adalah untuk memastikan kawasan-kawasan penanaman padi mempunyai perhubungan jalanraya yang baik.

Selain itu, pengagihan tenaga elektrik dan penyaluran air bersih ke kawasan luar bandar perlu diberi perhatian. Masa yang paling sesuai bagi melaksanakan projek ini adalah sekarang. Ini kerana kos penyediaan prasarana ini hanya akan meningkat jika kita terus berdalih. Tambahan pula, kos penggunaan penjana tenaga elektrik di kawasan pedalaman dan luar bandar di Sarawak akan menjadi lebih mahal dengan peningkatan harga bahan api. Selain menjamin kesejahteraan rakyat, penyediaan prasarana ini meningkatkan kadar keselamatan dengan kurangnya penggunaan lilin dan minyak gas di rumah-rumah panjang dan kawasan pedalaman. Untuk makluman Dewan, tidak semua kawasan petempatan manusia di Sarawak mempunyai stesen bomba dan penyelamat mahupun pili-pili api.

Sehubungan dengan tenaga elektrik, adalah disarankan agar pihak kerajaan boleh menyediakan tarif yang murah untuk keluarga yang berpendapatan rendah. Akhir sekali, diharap agar institusi-institusi pengajian tinggi berkerjasama dengan pihak swasta dalam menjalankan R&D bagi mencari penyelesaian yang effektif dan, dengan izin, cost effective.

Tuan Yang Di-Pertua,

Hospital Umum Sarawak, atau SGH, di Kuching pada masa ini boleh di-katakan sebagai hospital umum yang paling sibuk dan serba kekurangan. SGH merupakan satu-satunya hospital umum di Bandaraya; selebihnya merupakan poliklinik-poliklinik dan hospital-hospital swasta.

Saya telah meninjau sendiri SGH dan menerima rungutan dan laporan dari pihak-pihak tertentu yang meminta kerajaan melalui kementerian yang berkaitan untuk mengambil maklum keadaan di SGH. Dengan bertambahnya bilangan pesakit, keadaan tempat letak kereta telah menjadi sesak menjadikan ramai yang terpaksa meletakkan kenderaan di luar kawasan hospital yang amat menyusahkan terutamanya kepada para pesakit dan ahli-ahli keluarga. Sungguhpun di Dewan Rakyat pada 21 Mei, Timbalan Menteri Kesihatan ada menyatakan bahawa dana bagi membina tempat letak kereta disalurkan untuk membina wad baru, semestinya tindakan lain diambil bagi menangani masalah ini. Diharapkan pihak Kementerian boleh memaklumkan Dewan yang mulia ini akan cara-cara lain bagi menangani masalah ini.

Masa menunggu para pesakit bagi mendapat perhatian masih lagi lama dan ada-kalanya mengambil masa satu hari suntuk. Keadaan ini memudaratkan mereka yang berasal dari luar Bandaraya Kuching yang terpaksa bergegas untuk menaiki perkhidmatan bas awam yang biasanya terhad perkhidmatannya. Sekiranya tiada tindakan yang diambil, saya percaya keadaan di hospital umum Sarawak akan menjadi lebih teruk. Pesakit dan pekerja di SGH akan menerima padahnya. Disarankan tindakan-tindakan sewajarnya boleh diambil di SGH dan disusuli oleh pembinaan satu lagi hospital awam di Bandaraya Kuching.

Di kawasan-kawasan luar bandar pula, saya berharap kerajaan dapat mendirikan lebih banyak lagi poliklinik-poliklinik. Memandangkan perkhidmatan ‘Flying Doctors’ dengan izin, di Sarawak yang tidak konsistan kerana faktor-faktor luar kawalan, ada baiknya sekiranya sebahagian perkhidmatan ini diambil alih dengan mendirikan poliklinik-poliklinik di kawasan luar bandar. Dengan bertambahnya pusat perkhidmatan kesihatan di luar bandar nescaya beban yang dihadapi oleh hospital umum dapat diringankan. Malahan para pesakit juga tidak perlu ke bandar-bandar utama untuk menerima rawatan yang diperlukan.

Sekiranya poliklinik-poliklinik ini telah didirikan, jangan pula isu ketiadaan tenaga pekerja timbul dan mengakibatkan poliklinik tersebut terbiar dan kosong. Ini merupakan satu pembaziran wang rakyat. Keadaan seperti ini dapat diatasi sekiranya terdapat perancangan tenaga kerja ataupun ‘man power planning’, dengan izin, yang terperinci. Saya percaya tidak ada masalah yang tidak mempunyai jalan penyelesaiannya. Kerajaan melalui kementerian yang berkaitan mempunyai kepakaran dan para perunding yang terbaik yang boleh memikirkan jalan penyelesaian bagi masalah-masalah yang dihadapi.
